What is Lorem Ipsum and why does everyone use it?

If you've spent any time working with design mockups, website templates, print layouts, or app wireframes, you've seen it. "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit..." — a block of Latin-like text that designers, developers, and publishers use as placeholder content when the real text isn't ready yet.

Lorem ipsum is the industry-standard dummy text for a very practical reason: it looks like real language without being readable. When a client or reviewer sees actual words in a mockup, they tend to focus on the words rather than the design. Placeholder text that looks like language — but isn't — keeps the focus where it belongs: on the layout, typography, spacing, and visual hierarchy. This is called "greeking" in publishing, and lorem ipsum is by far the most widely used form of it.

The text itself comes from a work by the Roman philosopher Cicero called "De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (On the Ends of Good and Evil), written in 45 BC. It was scrambled and rearranged in the 1500s by an unknown typesetter to use as example text, and it's been the go-to placeholder ever since. The standard opening — "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit" — is loosely derived from the phrase "Dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet consectetur adipisci velit," which roughly translates as "pain itself, because it is pain, it desires to be with, to be loved."

What makes this lorem ipsum generator different?

There are dozens of lorem ipsum generators online. Most give you a text box, a paragraph count, and a copy button. We went further:

Three output formats — plain text, HTML, and Markdown

The most common frustration with basic lorem ipsum tools is that they only give you plain text. If you're working in a CMS, you need paragraphs wrapped in <p> tags so you can paste directly into the HTML editor without reformatting. If you're writing in Markdown — for a readme file, a static site generator, or a documentation tool — you need paragraphs separated by blank lines in the Markdown convention. Our tool offers all three formats from the same generator.

Start with the classic opening — optional

Most designers and developers expect lorem ipsum to begin with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit..." — it's such a recognisable placeholder that starting with something different can feel wrong in a professional context. The "Start with Lorem ipsum..." toggle ensures your first paragraph always opens with the traditional phrase, while all subsequent paragraphs are randomly generated.

Download as a .txt file

If you need to send placeholder text to a client, save it for a project, or import it into software that doesn't support copy-paste well, downloading the output as a plain text file is far more practical than copying from a text box. One click generates a properly formatted lorem-ipsum.txt file ready to use anywhere.

Number paragraphs option

When filling a multi-section layout, numbered paragraphs ("1.", "2.", etc.) help you track which block goes where. This is particularly useful when handing mockups to a client and saying "replace paragraph 3 with your actual section copy."

Live word and character count

Know exactly how much text you're generating. The stats bar above the output shows the total word count and character count, updating every time you generate. This helps when you need a specific amount of content — for example, if you're testing a 200-word text field or need to approximate the length of a typical article.

When do you use lorem ipsum?

Web design and UI/UX mockups

Lorem ipsum is most commonly used in Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, and similar design tools when laying out a website or app before the real content exists. Filling text boxes with lorem ipsum shows how the design handles different amounts of copy, whether headings get clipped, and how the layout flows on different screen sizes.

Print design and publishing

Brochures, catalogues, magazines, and book layouts are often designed before the final copy is approved. Typesetters have used lorem ipsum since the 1500s as a way to show clients how a printed page will look without waiting for final text. Tools like InDesign even have a built-in "Fill with Placeholder Text" option that generates lorem ipsum automatically.

WordPress themes and templates

Theme developers use lorem ipsum extensively when building WordPress themes and page builder templates. Demo content that ships with a theme is almost always populated with lorem ipsum paragraphs so buyers can see the theme's design without the developer needing to write actual content for every section.

Email template design

HTML email templates are often designed and tested with placeholder text before the real email copy is ready. Using lorem ipsum lets the designer check rendering across email clients without being distracted by actual marketing messages.

Testing and development

Developers use lorem ipsum when building and testing text components — checking that a character limit truncates correctly, that a text area scrolls properly, or that a read-more toggle works as expected. Generating a specific number of words makes it easy to hit exact character counts for testing edge cases.

What does "lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" actually mean?

The full standard opening — "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua" — is a scrambled extract from Cicero's philosophical work. A rough (and somewhat forced) translation of the original Latin would be something like: "Pain itself, because it is pain, it wishes to be with, to be loved; no one undertakes laborious physical exercise except to obtain some advantage from it."

The key point is that it doesn't mean much as written — that's deliberate. The text was specifically scrambled to prevent it from forming coherent sentences that would distract a reader examining a typeset layout. It's close enough to real Latin to look natural on the page, but meaningless enough that no one reads it for content.

Frequently asked questions

Is lorem ipsum still used in modern design?

Yes, very much so. Despite being over 500 years old as a typesetting convention, lorem ipsum remains the universal standard for placeholder text in web design, print design, app development, and publishing. Tools like Figma, InDesign, WordPress, and countless others either generate it natively or accept it as standard placeholder content.

How much lorem ipsum text should I generate?

It depends on the context. For a typical web page section, 1–2 paragraphs is usually enough to test the layout. For a full article or blog post mockup, 3–5 paragraphs gives a more realistic impression of how the design handles longer content. For testing individual UI elements like input fields or cards, a few sentences or even just a handful of words is sufficient.

What is the difference between the plain text and HTML output?

Plain text output gives you the raw lorem ipsum text with paragraphs separated by blank lines — suitable for most word processors, text editors, and simple text fields. HTML output wraps each paragraph in <p></p> tags, ready to paste into an HTML file, a WordPress text block, or any CMS that accepts HTML. Use HTML output when you're working directly with web code or a CMS editor.

Does this tool store or track the generated text?

No. All generation happens in your browser using JavaScript. The lorem ipsum text is generated on your device and never sent to any server. There's nothing to store — the text exists only in your browser until you copy or download it.

Can I use lorem ipsum text in a live website?

Technically yes, but it's strongly advised against. Lorem ipsum on a live website signals to visitors — and search engines — that the site is incomplete or unprofessional. More importantly from an SEO perspective, lorem ipsum is meaningless text that contributes nothing to your page's relevance for any search query. Always replace placeholder text with real, meaningful content before launching a page publicly.

Are there alternatives to lorem ipsum?

Yes. Some designers prefer to use realistic content from the actual industry — for example, a food website mockup might use recipe text as placeholder copy, while a news site might use real article snippets. There are also alternative ipsum generators that produce themed placeholder text (Hipster Ipsum, Cupcake Ipsum, etc.) for a more whimsical tone. However, for professional client work and standard design presentations, classic lorem ipsum remains the expected choice.
